sliver-wood

so yesterday we were in the backyard and makenzie managed to get a sliver in her little finger. she came and showed me, not crying, the entry point of the splinter of wood. she was not too worried about it and once we went inside i had her show cherisse. she told her that we were going to have to take it out and that is when it started. she began to scream as if we were going to be hawking her kidneys on eBay after a makeshift operation on the kitchen table with ikea colored utensils. there was an array of things that came out of her mouth, that she did not want us to cut off her finger, she did not want us to touch her, all that she wanted was a band-aid and everything would be ok. with her running all around the house and hiding where she could to avoid us, not knowing that the crying and screaming gave away her location.
we decided that it would be best to go after the splinter lodged in her pinky finger at a later time. she mentioned it on and off all night long. "it does not hurt, dad. see you don't need to take it out." every time i tried to explain that it would get infected she would start her panic, dad is putting my hand in a vice and turning on the band saw, look.
after she was asleep and the "splinter fairy" went in with some tweezers and carefully took out the intruder. when she woke up in the morning we asked her where the splinter went. then we told her about the splinter fairy. unlike the tooth fairy that leaves some coin under your pillow, the splinter fairy just removes small pieces of wood and leaves you with a band aid.
